Coastal Defences

The methods chosen to control coastal erosion and provide protection to the various seafront communities along the East Riding coastline vary at each location. Where towns have a long history of growth the defended frontages often reflect this development, changing over the years to suit the demands placed upon them as well as the need to be continually rebuilt or upgraded.

Maintenance of our defended frontages

Coastal defence structures are required to withstand one of the most aggressive natural environments, thus they require regular ongoing maintenance. Lack of such maintenance would mean that minor damage would rapidly spread and cause a more serious structural failure.

Coastal Processes

The coastal processes at work along the East Riding of Yorkshire coastline are driven primarily by storms waves that drive sediment along the foreshore and erode the cliff face and underlying seabed. Living alongside the coastline can be hazardous and demanding.
